Myrrh resin is a natural gum.
 
It has been used historically as a perfume, incense and medicine. Myrrh is used externally in liniments for bruises, aches, and sprains or healing salves that can be applied to abrasions and other minor skin ailments. Myrrh is used as an antiseptic in mouthwashes, gargles, and toothpastes.
It has also been shown to be effective in fighting certain types of parasitic infections.
